Trade Pulse Ep. 58 — This Week In Institutional Order Flow

Jim Batchelder walks through a SOXL case study on the Trade Pulse platform, showing how a Power Inflow signal caught an 8-9% intraday reversal off the morning lows.

Jim Batchelder opens this week’s Trade Pulse walkthrough with his usual framing of what the platform actually does: real-time order flow data and real-time market flow data, built around the idea that traders make better decisions when they can see where institutional and retail money is actually moving rather than guessing from price action alone. Before diving into the day’s example, he runs through the core visual language of the platform, since it recurs in every chart the show features. The white line is simply the stock’s price, updating minute by minute. The light blue line is what Trade Pulse calls large deal flow, its proxy for institutional buying and selling, built from any order flagged at $100,000 or more in value. Green and red shading layered on top represents momentum flow, a read on retail sentiment based on whether buying or selling pressure is currently dominant. And the vertical green bar is the platform’s signature feature, the Power Inflow signal, an AI-driven marker that only fires on a small handful of the roughly 2,000 stocks Trade Pulse tracks each day, specifically when the algorithm detects a meaningful shift in order flow from negative to positive.

The case study for this episode is SOXL, the leveraged semiconductor ETF, using a full prior trading day’s worth of data. Jim walks through the opening stretch first, noting that SOXL fell hard right out of the gate, dropping from around 112 down to roughly 95 within the first hour of trading. He points out how the order flow data mirrored that decline in real time: the momentum shading stayed solidly red, and the large deal line, largely flat and unremarkable up to that point, was also trending lower alongside the price. It’s a useful setup precisely because nothing about the tape looked encouraging yet.

The turn comes around 11:00 a.m. Eastern, when the Power Inflow signal activates. Jim narrates the shift across both data layers: the momentum shading flips from red toward green fairly quickly, but the more dramatic change shows up in the large deal line, which had been choppy and directionless and then spikes upward and keeps climbing for the rest of the session. SOXL’s price follows suit, rising from around 98 at the time of the signal to an intraday high near 108, an 8-9% move captured in a matter of hours. Jim frames this as the core thesis of the platform: institutional money moving into a name tends to show up in the data before the price fully reflects it, and the Power Inflow signal exists to flag that shift as early as possible.

From there, the episode broadens into a tour of the rest of the Trade Pulse interface. He shows the Power Inflows tab, which lists every stock that has generated a signal on a given day, typically only 10 to 15 out of the full 2,000-plus tracked names. He walks through Top Flows, a ranked list using the platform’s proprietary score that blends momentum and large deal data to surface the names showing the strongest order flow at any given moment, updating continuously as new orders come in. He demonstrates the Market Board, which lets users sort every tracked stock by momentum, daily performance, or large deal activity, calling out Microsoft and Micron as the day’s leaders on the large deal metric. And he closes with Sector Flows, which ranks entire sectors by order flow strength and lets users drill into any one of them, in this case energy, to see the top 30 contributing names ranked by the same proprietary score.

Jim wraps the episode with the standard Trade Pulse offer that closes most episodes in this series: a 14-day free trial with no charge, plus 30% off the first month for anyone who subscribes afterward, along with an invitation to reach the team directly at tradepulse.net with any questions about the data or the platform.
